Acne can be frustrating for an adult or anyone. It is extremely difficult to deal with. Thats why here I want to discuss how to get rid of acne as an adult.
Because this goes deeper than just your physical appearance. Acne scars your skin, as well as scarring you emotionally.
We don’t always feel most confident when we have acne, especially as an adult.
I remember growing up and not having any acne, even throughout my teenage years. I may have gotten a pimple here or there but nothing serious and nothing consistent.
When I hit my mid-twenties that’s when the acne started to appear. I absolutely hated it my skin was no longer smooth or clear.
My skin is also prone to hyperpigmentation or dark spots. So when the pimple was gone I was left with a dark spot on my face, that didn’t match the rest of my skin.
I am still managing my acne and trying to restore my skin to what it was before my acne, there are many things I learned along the way which I’ll share here with you that help my skin.

Finding A Good Cleanser
This is a very important step, the cleanser has to work with your skin and not against it.
A lot of time people think because they have acne prone skin they need cleansers that will completely remove all oils from the skin and make your face squeaky clean.
This is untrue, squeaky-clean cleansers leave your skin so dry that it has to produce more oils to compensate.
Which still leaves you with oily skin. The best thing to do is find a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling clean but not dried out.
I have two cleansers that I really like Kate Somerville Eradikate Daily Foaming Cleanser. Read here for more information about this cleanser.
Another one of the cleansers I really like is Biores Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser.
This cleanser is also really great for acne prone skin without drying it out.
Exfoliate
When you have acne, your skin doesn’t look the same as it did before.
You may start to get dark spots and uneven skin texture, you’re going to need a good exfoliator.
There are two types of exfoliators, a physical exfoliator and a chemical exfoliator.
Now the difference between the two is that one is like a scrub and the other is like a mask that has active ingredients that help to exfoliate the skin.
I like both types of exfoliating and sometimes it just depends on what your skin needs.
Physical exfoliators can be a bit damaging to the skin if you don’t select the right one.
A physical exfoliator I like is one by The Better Skin Co. called Better Skin Lava Magik.
You always want to make sure that the exfoliator you buy is gentle on the skin and the scrubbing beads are not too rough or big.
This can be more harmful to the skin than helpful.
A physical/chemical exfoliator that I really love is the one from Kate Somerville called Exfolikate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment.
This one is really amazing and leaves the skin feeling really smooth after use.
It’s both a physical and chemical exfoliator because it has little beads that scrub your skin. It also has lactic acid and salicylic acid, which chemically exfoliate the skin.
It’s very important to pick the right exfoliator for your skin type. This can be done 2-3 times a week, depending on your skins sensitivity.
Masks
This is also a very important step, once a week you want to use a mask that helps with acne.
Clay masks and mud masks are usually the best for acne, but if you have sensitive skin you may want to look for a very gentle mask.
Click here to see my top clay masks right now. And here for other masks I love for acne prone skin.
This should be done once a week, masks are drying and too much of this is not good for the skin.
Serums
Now here is where some people may use acne treating products or preventative products if you’ve cleared up you acne and don’t want it to come back.
I really love using the iS Clinical active serum although it is a bit pricy. This makes your skin look amazing the next day.
After I apply this and leave it overnight my skin looks completely clear and smooth the next day.
iS Clinical is specifically for acne, redness, free radical damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, blackheads and whiteheads.
Salicylic Acid and benzoyl peroxide are also good for treating acne, these you can get over the counter and is a bit cheaper.

Moisturizer
Moisturizing is a very important part of the process. A lot of times people who have oily skin think that they don’t need to moisturize, this is incorrect.
If you leave your skin dry it produces more oil and this doesn’t help, and this makes more acne.
I really like using a facial oil as my moisturizer because I’ve had a hard time finding one that doesn’t just sit on top of my skin.
With the facial oil I feel like it actual penetrates my skin and helps to keep it moisturized.
One of my favorite facial oils is Cold Pressed Rosehip Oil. It’s a very gentle oil and very affordable.
Another one that I really like is one by Drunk Elephant called B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum
Find the right moisturizer for your specific skin type and use it one you finish all the rest of the steps. This is usually the last step.
Sunscreen
This is a very important skin care step that is great for all things. Every morning before you leave the house regardless of if its sunny, make sure you apply sunscreen.
This will help your skin over time.
One of my favorite sunscreens is Elta MD Tinted UV Daily Broad Spectrum SPF 46. It’s great for acne prone skin. For more information about this sunscreen click here.

What We Put Into Our Body’s
A lot of time people focus so much on the external and forget about the internal. Treating your skin will only get you so far.
One of the reasons you may get acne is that you’re not eating healthy and your body is reacting to it.
Eating healthy whole foods is the way to go. Also drinking a lot of water will do wonders for you.
Maybe even speak to your doctor about certain foods that may not be right for your body.
Consistency
Last but not least, this is a very important step, whatever your skin care routine is the key is to be consistent and have some patience with your skin.
See what works and what doesn’t work for you and give yourself time. Stressing yourself out can only make it worse.
If your not consistent this will not work. Making time for your skin and your skincare needs is very important to the health and look of your skin.
