Having acne prone skin is not easy to deal with and requires more care, thats why this guide will teach you how to do a facial at home.
Going to the Spa and having a facial done, it’s the most amazing feeling which is why I try to recreate the feeling at home.
Its not only great for your skin its super relaxing. After your done your skin just looks and feels great.
So how do I do my facial at home?

Preparing For An At Home Facial
The first thing you want do to prepare for a facial is gather all your products that you want to use for your facial.
Then get comfy… maybe put on your favorite robe make your self a cup of soothing tea.
You can even put on some soothing music to help you relax and feel at ease.
Cleanse
The first step to any great facial is a really good cleanser. Apply the cleanser to your face and rub in circular motions for at least a minute.
If you would like to use a tool to help cleanse your face that works too.
I usually like to use my hands and rub this into my skin, it feels very soothing and relaxing.
I like to cleanse my skin twice just to make sure that all the dirt and grimy is no longer on my skin.
Kate Somerville’s Daily Foaming Cleanser is one of my favorites. Click here to read more about this daily foaming cleanser.
Exfoliate
Next step is exfoliating. Now this can be done two different ways. You can either use a physical exfoliator or a chemical exfoliator.
The difference between the two is that the physical one has the little beads that help you to scrub your face. One of my favorite physical exfoliators is better skin lava magik by the better skin co.
The chemical one had acids in it. You apply this to your face and wait for 10-15 minutes (depending on the instructions or your skin sensitivity). A chemical exfoliant that I like to use is Sukari BabyFacial by Drunk Elephant.
I love using both of these (not at the same time). And one exfoliant that does both is the Kate Somerville Intensive Exfoliating Treatment.
This one is amazing because it has a gentle exfoliant that you can can scrub your skin with, but theres also a chemical aspect that works when you leave it on for a couple of minutes.
When I use the physical one my skin instantly feels smoother right away. The chemical is amazing too, it just takes a little longer to see results.
Steam
This part is really good. There are a lot of facial steamers out there that you can use.
Or you can boil some water in a pot. Put the water into a bowl and add your favorite essential oils.
When putting your face over the bowl you can use a towel over your head to help the steam get closer to your skin.
With either one of these methods you want to be extremely careful not to burn your skin.
Also be careful not to get too close to either method.
The steam is to open your pores so when you use a mask all the dirt is pulled from your skin.

Mask
This is one of my favorite parts. I either apply a homemade mask or one that’s already made.
See my favorite mud masks here or my 5 masks that help with acne here.
If I use a homemade mask I apply it with a foundation brush otherwise I use my hands.
After applying the mask you can just sit back and relax and wait for the mask to work its magic.
Sheet Mask
After using a mask to pull out all of the dirt from your skin, a sheet mask is a great way to add the moisture back in.
After you apply a sheet mask you let it stay for 5-10 minutes depending on the instructions.
I have tried many sheet mask and like a lot of them like the ones from Sephora. I also like Purlisse Charcoal + Licorice Pore Refining Sheet Mask or 111 Skin Rose Gold Brightening Facial Treatment Mask.
Don’t let the mask dry on your face, you want there to be enough moisture to rub into your skin when you remove it.
While this is working you can sit back and drink your tea and listen to soothing music and just relax.
Serums
The next step in the at home facial is serums.
This is where you apply any serums that you may use for your skin conditions. Such as scarring, texture or dark spots.
One serum that I really love is the iS Clinical Active Serum.
This active serum is amazing for acne prone skin. iS Clinical Active Serum is antibacterial which is good for acne.
Moisturize
Moisturizing is the last step to lock everything in. I usually like using a facial oil for my moisturizer.
I’ve tried many creams but haven’t really loved anyone to use consistently.
One of my favorite facial oils is a cold pressed rose hip oil that’s all natural.
This rose hip oil has helped to improve the texture and scarring from my skin.
I’ve also recently found a cream that I really like from Drunk Elephant called the B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum.
I know the name says its a serum, but the consistency is more like a cream than a serum.
This moisturizer is light weight, and does not sit on your skin. It penetrates the skin very well and is not sticky either.

Lip Balm
This is usually the final step when I do my facials at home. After our face is moisturized and glowing we don’t want to forget about our lips.
There are two lip balms that I love the first is Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. This is one of my favorites the Laneige has a great consistency. Your lips feel well moisturized but overly greasy.
Another one of my favorites that can be used at anytime is The Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm.
This lip balm is the best! and believe my I’ve tried so many. The Jack Black Lip Balm comes in my different flavors that smell great.
It also a bit thicker than some formulas but its not uncomfortable on your lips. I love this lip balm, and have stopped used others since I started using this.
I have tried a couple of the different scents and all of them are great, but the shea butter with vitamin e is the best.
Nothing so far has compared to this besides the Laneige. But the Laneige is more of a night time lip balm before bed.
The Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm can be used at anytime.
final thoughts
And this would be the last step in the at home facial. After that make a cup of tea, sit back and relax and enjoy some quiet time.
Let me know in the comments below if you’ve done your own at home facials and what are some tips and tricks you’ve picked up along the way. Is there anything you would do differently?
Disclaimer: I purchased all products discussed in this review, and this is my honest opinion.
